Activity

This week's activity is the final Carolyn's Corner activity for the 2007–2008 school year. This activity requires that you scratch your head and recall a specific situation.

Here's the activity:

As you prepared for spelling bee competition, you probably encountered many words that you had not yet heard used in "real life." Have you sometime this year been watching a movie, reading a book, or listening to a conversation and heard a word that you had not heard used before or a word whose meaning you knew only because of your study efforts? Did the thought "Hey! I studied that word!" cross your mind?

Try to recall a time when you encountered in "real life" a studied word. What you were doing or reading or what you were listening to when you had this experience?

In case you are unable to recall such an experience, I will share with you details about an experience like this that I had. I was watching the movie version of The Indian in the Cupboard, which came out several years ago. I practically jumped when I heard spoken, for the first time, a word that first appeared in our study booklet in a category of words entitled Synonyms and Antonyms (1996–2000). The word was skookum. This word later resurfaced in our study booklet in a category of words entitled Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down (2006).
