One of last year's finalists, Vanya Shivashankar (Speller 90), correctly spelled "ephemeral" and is still in the Bee.
Vanya asked Dr. Bailly about the root words and walked back to her seat with a nod.
She finished fifth last year. Her sister, Kavya, was the 2009 champion.
