Week 35: May 12, 2008

You have arrived at the penultimate week of Carolyn's Corner before you head off to Washington, D.C., for the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee, where you have some exciting treats waiting for you. One of these treats is your accommodations during your stay. Tuesday of Bee Week has as its major event the All-American Barbecue at The Pavilions of Turkey Run and The Claude Moore Colonial Farm in McLean, Virginia. It's an event you won't want to miss!

Between now and Bee Week you will probably think of items you want to be sure to pack for your trip. I've already started my list of things to remember. Washington can have unseasonable weather, with both extremes occurring in the same week! My family was not prepared one year for unusually cold weather, and we had to buy hooded sweatshirts after we arrived. Now we take jackets, umbrellas, and sunscreen! The hidden phrase in this week's activity might help you remember to come prepared—whether the weather be cold, wet, or hot! You might even wish to start sizing up Washington's weather. . .

This week's Words of the Champions are a "blast from the past"! Henry Feldman, winner of the 1960 Scripps National Spelling Bee, is the featured champion. Henry's reflections bring to a close this year's Words of the Champions in Carolyn's Corner. I feel very fortunate to be able to bring to you Henry's delightful stories. I hope that you have enjoyed hearing from previous champions. See About Words of the Champions for a look at how this aspect of Carolyn's Corner got its name.

On Wednesday night (May 29) of Bee Week, from 7:00 until 7:45 p.m., there will be an assembly for all the national finalists. During this assembly spellers will be given much important information about the competition. There will be a discussion about the kinds of questions spellers may ask while they are at the microphone. Reminder to spellers: It is your responsibility to gather as much information as possible to help you spell your given word correctly.

Last week we talked about root-word questions. This week we will talk about two other types of information you may wish to ask the pronouncer to provide. You may ask for a word's definition, and you may ask for clarification of a word's pronunciation.

See this week's study tip for some advice about how to get the most out of your study time that remains. I hope that you will come back next week so that we can visit one more time before the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee. I have enjoyed my visits with you, and I am sad to see them coming to a close. The good news is that I will have a chance to meet you in person during Bee Week 2008!
