Eva Vega, speller 165, was ready to go.
"Good morning Dr. Bailly," she said.
"Good morning. How are you?" he asked.
"Good," she said.
"Should we do this?" Dr. Bailly questioned.
"Mmhmm," she said, spelling elocutionist correctly.
It didn't go as well for Abigail Pittman, speller 166, a North Carolina eighth grader.
"I'm sorry?" she said upon hearing her word, "roentgen."
"Can you spell the word?" she asked.
"Oh, I always hope I don't have to do that," Dr. Bailly said. This time, he did, and Abigail got out.
