Emily Sun, speller 112, put her hands to her chest and exhaled deeply. The Massachusetts seventh grader spelled "cryptozoa" correctly after pausing partway through, and will remain in the Bee.
Lela Festa, speller 113, was similarly relieved when she spelled "empyrean" correctly. The Massachusetts eighth grader breathed more easily after she was told she got the word right.
