At the end of the round, there are 17 spellers left. Five are out. The latest is Nicholas Ivan, speller 287, who misspelled noyade, a mass drowning.

The Indiana eighth grader was in his first Bee.

Alex Iyer, speller 259, brought some chuckles to the crowd when he heard his word, attentat.

"Eee-eee-eee!" he shouted, when he heard it, throwing his arms up. "I think I know it, but I’m not really sure, so I’m just going to ask some questions."

He knew it.
