Caleb Miller (Speller 97), a Louisiana eighth grader, started off his exchange by joking with the pronouncer, Dr. Jacques Bailly, after he heard his sentence.
"Classic Dr. Bailly," he said.
The sentence: Athletic cyanope seeks flaneur for bavardage on the beach.
"I'll be here all night," Dr. Bailly replied.
It sounded like Caleb knew the word, "cyanope," after he asked whether it came from the Greek "ops," meaning eye. It did.
"Thank goodness," he said.
But he misspelled the beginning.
"Oh, you've gotta be kidding me," Caleb said before exiting the stage.
