Rishik Gandhasri, speller 5 and a California seventh grader, spelled "frailejón" correctly as the first word -- taking it down to the wire. It's a plant of a genus of perennial flowering subshrubs of the higher Andes which are structurally adapted for life and growth with a limited water supply.

Rishik tied for 25th place last year. Earlier words include crambo, invincible, Yiddishkeit, hendiadys, Aufgabe, hinalea and keriah.
