Spellers and audience members stood for Cameron Keith, speller 29, who just misspelled "noncompos" and has been eliminated from the competition.
The Colorado fourth grader tied for 50th place last year. This year, he said he nearly missed his word in an earlier round, and so was glad to have gotten this far.
"It was my goal for the year, so it's amazing," he said.
