Next, the finalists

Deetya Vuppala, speller 567 and a cousin of 2016 champion Nihar Janga, was the last speller of the day.

The Washington fifth grader misspelled "somesthetic," of, relating to, or concerned with bodily sensations.

Next, we find out who the finalists are.

No more than 50 spellers will move on to the next round. With 369 spellers who got their words right, how do we determine who moves on?

It's all about their scores on the preliminary test. Of the 565 spellers who started with us on Monday, their scores on the written test were tallied. Those who scored highest -- and spelled two words correctly on stage -- will remain in the competition.

At the end of Round 3, 149 spellers had misspelled and were eliminated. The remaining spellers all did a good job, but their scores weren't high enough to get them to the next round.
