Sometimes spellers try to sneak non-standard questions in there. Like this one, from speller 245, Cassie Rust.
"If this word was a color, what color would it be?" she asked Dr. Bailly.
"I'm not too good at those synesthetic judgments," he answered.
Cassie, a Utah sixth grader, misspelled "dysrhythmia" and is out.
And Jasmina Frederico, speller 248, also had a request.
"Would you do me a favor and give me an easy word?" she asked.
"I'd like to. I'm hoping," Dr. Bailly said.
The Utah fifth grader misspelled "ineducable" and was eliminated.
