Tejas Muthusamy, speller 259, a two-time finalist, was a favorite to win the bee. But the Virginia seventh grader misspelled "salele," a kind of fish, and is out of the competition.
Tejas' fellow spellers gave him a standing ovation as he walked off stage. He had tied for eighth place in 2014 and seventh place in 2015.
