At 11 and in his first appearance at the bee, Nihar Janga, speller 232, is the youngest to remain in the competition. The Texas fifth grader said he was "pretty happy" with how things were going so far.
"I'm very proud," he said.
Nihar was the only speller to get a perfect score on the preliminary test.
