Snehaa Kumar, speller 16, misspelled "usucapion." Snehaa was the only remaining speller who had been to the finals before, and a California eighth grader. The two remaining spellers are in seventh and fifth grade.
Snehaa tied for fourth place last year.
This year, she was wearing a lucky scarab necklace. She studied from the dictionary this year.
"It's my last year, and I've just worked so hard," she said. "You understand the enormity of the dictionary."
