Behind every great student is a great teacher. These teachers make learning fun by thinking outside the box and creating classroom experiences that resonate with their students. They serve many roles in their schools, as spelling coaches, school bee coordinators and judges; more often than not, they are motivators who encourage their students to be the best they can be. In the “Teacher Feature,” we celebrate these educators and their commitment to their students' education.
Today we are highlighting the work of Mrs. Deede Jones, a librarian at Leon Sheffield Magnet Elementary School in Decatur, Alabama. Leon Sheffield Magnet Elementary School is part of the Adventure Travel spelling bee program.
Bryce Carroll, a student at Leon Sheffield Magnet Elementary School, reached out to the Bee about Mrs. Jones, who acts as the pronouncer for the school’s spelling bee. Bryce told us that the best thing about Mrs. Jones is her kindness. When pronouncing for the school’s bee she tells those who misspell, “Good try, you still have next year.”
Mrs. Jones’ kindness spills over into her work as a librarian. She frequently orders books for specific children if she thinks they will enjoy them. She also lets her students enjoy free time and plays games with them, something Bryce really enjoys.
Bryce also told us that Mrs. Jones is a fighter. She is currently battling cancer, but still comes to work every day with a smile on her face, determined to encourage her students and to put great books in their hands.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee would like to thank Mrs. Jones for her dedication to her school’s spelling bee program and to her students. We would also like to extend our thoughts and well wishes for her and her family during this difficult time.
