How does someone qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee?

In general terms, the Scripps National Spelling Bee program is open to students who have neither turned 16 nor passed beyond the eighth grade, and who attend schools that are officially enrolled with our program for the current academic year. To review a complete list of our 2026 eligibility requirements, visit spellingbee.com/rules beginning August 19, 2025.

How much does it cost to enroll?

Our prime enrollment period was August 15, 2013 through October 15, 2013, and our late enrollment period was October 16, 2013 through December 13, 2013. Local program sponsors also had the option to extend late enrollment through January 30, 2014.

Teachers and administrators may visit spellingbee.com in late August to enroll schools in the Bee program for the 2014-15 school year.
