Jason Sorin, speller 446 and a North Carolina seventh grader, misspelled "bullace," a small wild or half-domesticated European plum related to the damson and having small ovoid fruit in clusters.
Jason tied for 42nd place last year and 41st place in 2017.
Harini Logan, speller 493 and Texas fifth grader, misspelled "gharial," a large crocodilian of India distinguished from the typical crocodiles by long slender jaws with teeth of nearly uniform size; by a soft, swollen and inflatable nose tip; and by completely webbed feet.
Harini tied for 323rd place last year.
