Anabel Loucks, speller 16 and a California eighth grader, is the first speller to go out. She misspelled tyrannous, which means marked by rigorous, cruel, oppressive and unjustly severe government : oppressive.
It's her first appearance at the Bee.
Also out this morning is Jessie Godbee, speller 23. The Alabama seventh grader misspelled palaeophile, one fond of or informed about what is ancient.
