Jaden Zhang, speller 159, started to say hello to Dr. Bailly, but stumbled over his words. He managed to get a hello out, and had no trouble spelling his word - pahoehoe, cooled hard lava marked by a smooth often billowy shiny surface.
Nikhil Lahiri, speller 163, spelled guayabera correctly. It is a usually short-sleeved lightweight sport shirt designed to be worn untucked.
He asked Dr. Bailly how he was doing.
"Pretty good," the pronouncer responded. "We're in our element here."
